What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is a rare event where the Moon passes in front of the Sun! In Lawrence, Kansas on the 8th of April, 90% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon, and it will look like a crescent in the sky.

Event Details

The Society of Physics Students Chapter in Lawrence will be hosting an event to watch the eclipse. There will be speakers talking about the event, solar telescopes for getting a closer look, as well as other fun activities!

Never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection, even during an eclipse! This can easily blind you permanently. We will provide attendees with special glasses to block most of the Sun's light and make it safe to view. The solar telescopes have similar filters and are also safe.

Where and when will it be?

The event will be held on the old marching band practice field near the Lied Center. You can park next to the field for free, or in the Lied center parking lot if you have a Yellow Parking permit. See the map below.

The event will start at 12:00 PM and end at 3:30 PM, on Monday, April 8th. The maximum coverage of the Sun happens between 1:50 and 2:00 PM, so be sure not to miss it!

Backup Venue

Unfortunately, the weather can interfere with viewing an eclipse. If the weather does not permit us to view it ourselves, the event will be moved to the backup venue, located in Forums A, B, C, and D in the Burge Union (BURG in the image below). We will continue the planned activities and show a live stream of the eclipse from NASA.

Parking will be available nearby in the The Allen Fieldhouse and Central District Parking Garages (AFPK and CDPG). Please use the pay-on-foot kiosks to pay for parking if you don't have the proper parking permit. Parking costs $1.75 for the first hour and $1.50 for each subsequent hour.
